Vera Mae (Cotton) Walker

I came by today to see you

Vera Mae Walker was born on October 17, 1930 to the late Henry and Mary Cotton in Cottondale, Florida.

             Vera received her education at the St. Paul School in Campbellton, Florida. In 1947, she married James Walker and moved to New Jersey. The couple had two children, Reba and James, Jr.

             Vera was a very savvy business woman, with an exceptional work ethic. While working full time at the Charms Candy Factory, she and James purchased a bar named “The Pepper Club”, in Newark, New Jersey. The Pepper Club was very successful, as James and Vera were well known in Newark and the surrounding cities. Vera would eventually retire from the Charms Candy Factory after twenty-five years of service.

Vera lived in New Jersey for forty-three years, and in 1990 she returned home to Florida, to take care of her mother, Mary. Vera rededicated her life to Christ and served faithfully as a member of St. Paul’s Church. Vera had a generous spirit and would go out of her way to help others, time and time again.

Vera’s health began to fail and on Saturday, March 9, 2019, Vera departed this life. She was 88 years old.

In addition to her parents, Vera had several family members preceding her in death; James Walker, husband; Reba Walker, daughter; and two brothers: Joel Cotton and L. C. Cotton.

Vera leaves to cherish her precious memories, her son; James (Carrie) Walker, Jr.; granddaughter: Brenda Walker; five grandchildren: Alexandra Walker, Drake Harris, Greyson Walker, Briana Harris and Peyton Walker all from New Jersey; one brother: Ernest Hall of Jacob City, Florida; sister-in-law: Claudine Cotton of Jacksonville, Florida; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
