SSGT (Ret.) Coy Lee Knox, lovingly known as Coy, was born on October 3, 1934, in Campbellton, Florida, and passed away on May 22, 2026, in Marianna, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, selflessness, and quiet strength that touched the lives of many.
SSGT Knox was born to the late L. A. and Katie Pittman Knox, and from his earliest days he learned the values of humility, respect, and perseverance. He carried those virtues throughout his life, meeting each season with a steady spirit and a generous heart. Those who knew him will remember a man who treated others with dignity and compassion, and who offered his presence with sincerity and grace. In accordance with his Buddhist faith, his life reflected the importance of patience, loving-kindness, and the understanding that all beings are connected through the shared journey of life.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Teruko Moriyama Knox.
SSGT Knox attended Saint Paul School in Campbellton, Florida, where the foundation of his character was strengthened through learning and community. After his education, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. Through years of faithful service, he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and later retired on February 28, 1973. During his military career, he served with honor and distinction, and he received numerous merits and decorations, including the AFGCM and AFLSA. His final title while enlisted was Administrative Supervisor, a role that reflected his reliability, discipline, and ability to lead with calm professionalism. His service was a meaningful part of his life, and he carried the lessons of duty and responsibility with him long after retirement.
Beyond his accomplishments, SSGT Knox will be remembered most for the way he lived among others. He was kind in word and deed, friendly in spirit, and selfless in the care he showed to family, friends, and all who crossed his path. He had a gentle manner that brought comfort and a steady presence that inspired trust. His life was a reminder that true greatness is often found not in recognition, but in the simple and faithful ways one serves others each day. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, devotion, and love that will continue to be cherished by those who were blessed to know him.
He is survived by his son, Melvin Knox; six grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters: Frankie Woods of Jacksonville, Florida and Annie Phelts (Russell) of Salt Lake City, Utah; two brothers: Clarence Knox (Mudlin) of Jacksonville, Florida and Lewis Knox (Mary Ellen) of Atlanta, Georgia; nieces, nephews, relatives, cousins, and friends. Each of them carries forward a part of his story and the memory of his warm heart and enduring example. Though his earthly journey has come to a close, the influence of his life remains present in the family bonds he strengthened and the memories he created through a lifetime of devotion.
As a Buddhist, SSGT Knox understood the impermanence of life and the peace that comes from a life lived with compassion and right intention. May he be remembered with gratitude for the goodness he shared, and may all who mourn him find comfort in the many blessings of his long and meaningful life. May his transition be gentle, and may he rest in serene peace.
