Mr. William Alfred Mitchell, Sr.

On April 12, 1932, William Alfred Mitchell was born to Willie and Bernice Woods Mitchell in Webster, Florida. William was the youngest child from this union.

William graduated from high school in Webster, Florida, and matriculated to the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). After leaving FAMU in 1953, he was employed by the State of Florida at the Florida School for Boys (FSB) in Marianna, Florida, as a House Parent. After 5 years of employment at FSB, William resigned his position to pursue a career in insurance. In 1961, William returned to FSB and was employed as a Home Life Supervisor.

His favorite sports were golfing and fishing. William enjoyed fishing as a pastime, but golfing was his most passionate hobby. Oh, what an avid golfer he was. At any given day, you could find him on the course. William was also a connoisseur of jazz music.

William was a member of Saint James African Methodist Episcopal Church in Marianna, Florida. He served his church as a member of the Steward Board and Usher Board. William was a dedicated Usher who enjoyed his assignment, taking his service very serious. He served in this capacity until he was physically unable to do so. In the days that he was no longer able to attend church, William remained faithful. On April 18, 2023, William accepted his passage to come be with the Lord. He is now resting in the arms of the Lord.

The legacy of his memories will be cherished by his children: Orentha Mitchell of Valrico, Florida, Patricia M. Taylor of Elmira, New York, William A. Mitchell, Jr., of Marianna, Florida, Valaria M. Slater of Marianna, Florida, and Ronald D. Mitchell of Marianna, Florida; two sons-in-law: George Taylor of Elmira, New York and Jim Slater of Marianna, Florida; one daughter-in-law: Elizabeth Mitchell of Marianna, Florida; his sister: Matry Law of Webster, Florida; sixteen grandchildren: Dwayne, Angela, Rickie and Kevin Mitchell, Nateshia McConnell, Osten Taylor, Patrice Smith, Veronica Taylor, Isley Cotton, Ryan Davis, Isaac Davis II, Telisha Davis and David Davis, Bria, Keionna and Anastasia Mitchell; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
