Mr. James Bighems Obituary

James Bernard Bighems, known affectionately as James to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, in Marianna, Florida.

Born on April 17, 1929, James's life was marked by his gentle nature and his handy skills, which he generously shared with all who knew him.

James's journey began as the cherished son of Fannie L. Cotton Bighems and Emanuel Bighems, both of whom, along with his beloved wife Ida Elizabeth Gamble Bighems, preceded him in death. He carried the legacy of his grandparents, Rachel Knight Walker and Joseph L. Cotton, and was the brother to John Bighems, Curtis C. Bighems, Joe Nathan Brown, Mary C. Brown, and Irene V. Smith, who have all passed before him.

His life was one of dedication and love, which is evident in the family he leaves behind. His legacy will be carried on by his children: Elder James Michael Bighem, Sr. (Sylvia), Marvin Brown (Dorothy), Delana (Cookie) Haynes, Felix Bighem (Quintonia), Lori Bighems, and Elisha Donnell (Nate); his special friend, Shellie Johnson; James was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, leaving behind a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss his wisdom and gentle spirit. His memory will also be cherished by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a community of friends who were all touched by his kindness and warm heart.

James made a significant mark in his professional life as well. He was a long-time employee of Alabama Electric, where he dedicated many years of service before retiring. His colleagues knew him as a reliable and hardworking individual, whose presence brought not only skill but also camaraderie to the workplace.

As we say goodbye to James Bernard Bighems, we celebrate the remarkable life he led and the countless ways in which he enriched our lives. His memory will continue to inspire us, and his spirit will forever be a guiding light for his family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. James's life was a true testament to the beauty that lies in simplicity, the strength in kindness, and the honor in a life dedicated to family and community. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
