Mr. Homer Lee Mitchell, known affectionately as Homer to all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him, embarked on his final journey to meet his creator on June 17, 2024, after a life well-lived and full of purpose.
Born on April 26, 1941, in the serene coastal town of Bay Harbor, Florida now Panama City, Florida, Homer's life was a testament to the values of hard work, faith, and the power of a warm smile. His departure from this world took place in Panama City, Florida, surrounded by the love of his family and the memories of a community he helped shape.
The legacy of Homer is one of enduring love and the strength of family. He was the cherished son of John and Eva Mae Bishop Mitchell, who, along with his sister Lela Johnson and brothers Leroy Mitchell, Ira Lee Mitchell, Kenneth Mitchell, and Eugene Stiggons, preceded him in passing. The torch of his lineage is proudly carried on by his remaining siblings: Betty Kidd, Lucille Williams, James Mitchell, Beride Harris, Bruce Mitchell with his wife Vicki, and Georgia Mitchell, along with his sister-in-law Martha Mitchell. Homer's spirit continues to shine brightly through his children Maurice Walker (Kenyetta Ross), Tony Rockwell, Donald Mitchell (Lindsay), and Jade Ladson (Jay), as well as his beloved stepdaughters, Kimya Reed (Andrae) and Wendy Kelly.
Homer was a beacon of light and guidance to his adoring grandchildren, a group of bright stars in the Mitchell galaxy, including Uvarius, Uzavien, Ubriah, Brian, Zaccheus, Shakirah, David, Marcus, S'Tonya, Tatyana, Naudia, DaShawna, Harmony, Donavyn, Neariah, Keonne, Shamari, Omari, Demarcus, Christian, Caleb, and Calvin. Each of them carries a spark of his friendly and intelligent soul, and they continue to spread his faith-filled approach to life wherever they go.
A man of profound faith, Homer was a devoted member of the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He lived his beliefs, demonstrating what it means to serve others with a whole heart, a supportive word, and an unwavering commitment to the community. Homer was a 1961 graduate of Gibson High School in Titusville, Florida. His dedication to his faith was matched only by his commitment to his profession. For 33 years, he served as a Meter Reader with TECO Energy Gas, where his friendly demeanor made him not just an employee but a beloved figure to colleagues and customers alike.
Homer's impact extended beyond his professional life as he poured his intelligence and friendly nature into his role as a dedicated and trustworthy Trustee of the Redwood Cemetery, where he also served as the Treasurer. His efforts there were not just about maintaining a place of rest but about honoring the stories and the legacies of those who came before him.
Homer Mitchell was the epitome of a life well-lived. His intelligence shone through in every endeavor, his faith guided his every action, and his friendly nature made him a pillar in the lives of all he knew. He inspired us to look beyond ourselves and to find the joy in serving others. He taught us that each day is a gift to be opened with gratitude and that our true legacy is woven through the lives of those we touch.
