In the early hours of a serene spring morning, the Lord called home one of His most devoted servants, Mother Connie Pearl Wheeler. Known affectionately to all as Mother Connie, she departed from this world on March 31, 2025, in the peaceful town of Marianna, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and unwavering service to her community.
Born on September 6, 1931, in the warm heart of Graceville, Florida, Mother Connie was a beacon of light from the very beginning.
Mother Connie's journey through life was marked by an unwavering dedication to her family, her friends, and her faith. She was a matriarch in the truest sense, her love and guidance a constant presence in the lives of her children: the Elder James Michael Bighem and his wife Sylvia, Gene A. Britt and his wife Amity, Derry A. Bighem, and Tami D. Wiggins and her husband Richard. She was blessed with nineteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, each a precious jewel in the crown of her life's achievements. Her godsons, Billy R. Graham and Dedric Streeter, also held a special place in her heart, as did her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends. She always will be forever remembered her dear friends Ernestine McBride and Mother Rachel Harrison.
Mother Connie was a product of the Houston County School District, where she received her formal education. Her career was marked by service to others, a calling she fulfilled with grace and humility. She was a dedicated caregiver to Mr. E.D. Patterson until his passing and later retired from the Jackson County Senior Citizens as a van driver. Her hands, ever busy in the service of those in need, prepared delicious meals that filled both stomachs and souls, while her home stood as a sanctuary for any in search of shelter.
A holy ghost filled, God-fearing woman, Mother Connie found her spiritual home in the Mount Calvary Holiness Church in Graceville, Florida. It was there, in the later months of 1976, that she committed her life to the Lord's work. As a member of the church, she served faithfully in numerous ministries, leading the Culinary Staff and, in her later years, honored as the Church Mother. Her spirit was a guiding force within the congregation, inspiring all who knew her to walk in faith and love.
To describe Mother Connie is to speak of faith-filled exuberance, spirited devotion, and passionate service. Her life was a sermon, her actions a testament to the power of living a life steeped in the gospel. She met every challenge with courage and every triumph with humility, her eyes always fixed on the Lord she so fervently served.
As we gather to celebrate the life of Mother Connie Pearl Wheeler, we do so with hearts both heavy with loss and buoyant with the knowledge that she has claimed her place in the heavenly choir. We, who are left to cherish her memory, will carry forward the lessons of her life: to love without reservation, to serve without seeking reward, and to walk in faith no matter the trials we face.
Mother Connie has taken her rest from her labors, her spirit now free in the embrace of her Savior. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy will continue to shine in the lives she touched. Her journey on earth has ended, but her story—written in the hearts of all who loved her—will never be forgotten.
Rest well, Mother Connie, in the arms of the Almighty, until we meet again.
