Ms. Mattie Ruth Tolbert, affectionately known as "Madea", was a beacon of warmth and love, whose radiant spirit illuminated the lives of everyone she encountered. Born on June 28, 1941, in Slocomb, Alabama, Madea's journey through life was marked by her unwavering kindness and her nurturing heart.
On August 16, 2024, at the age of 83, Madea closed her eyes to this world, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that will be cherished forever.
Madea's early life in Slocomb laid the foundation for the incredible woman she would become. She blossomed into a brilliant young mind at G.C.T.S., where she graduated as the Salutatorian of her class, a testament to her intellect and determination. Her dedication to education and personal growth was a shining example for all who knew her. She was a dedicated and devoted member of Countyline Missionary Baptist Church before her health began to fail.
Throughout her life, Madea's home was a hub of joy and learning, where the children of the Slocomb community were nurtured under her watchful eye. She wasn't just "Madea" to her own children; she extended her maternal grace to every child she met, embracing them with genuine love that was as individual as it was unconditional. This extraordinary bond with the children of her community was a reflection of her loving, passionate, and friendly nature.
Madea's family was the center of her universe. Although she was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Frank and Pearl Tolbert; her sisters, Johnnie Pearl Rowe, Frankie Tolbert Whitehurst, Nellie Tolbert Pouncey, and Fannie Lou Boswell; her brother, George Tolbert; and the love of her life, Jerry Sewell, her spirit of family unity never wavered.
She leaves behind a legacy through her eight remarkable children: Teresa Thomas of Charlotte, North Carolina, Sandra Nobles (Jeff) of Slocomb, Alabama, Shirley Wynn (Kevin) of Slocomb, Alabama, Jerry Jr. Tolbert of Slocomb, Alabama, Scottie Tolbert of Slocomb, Alabama, Terry Tolbert (Tina) of Kinsey, Alabama, Gregory Tolbert of Atlanta, Georgia, and Dexter Tolbert (Ashley) of Malvern, Alabama, who will continue to walk in the light of her wisdom and strength.
Her special nephew, Carl Rowe (Sheeree), was like a son to her. Madea also leaves behind a treasure trove of memories for her very special grandchildren: Adrienne Smith, Rashawn Wynn, Jeffery Nobles Jr. (Elise), T. J. Tolbert, and Kayson Tolbert, as well as her adored great-grandchildren: Nyla, Layla, Marlei, Noelle, and Jeffery III, whose lives have been indelibly marked by her love and guidance. Extended family Harri Anne Smith (Charlie), Hope Johnson (Joseph), and Kay Christiansen (Brett). Madea's special caretaker, Sanida Bryant with Gift of Hands Home Care Services, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, will forever remember her nurturing presence.
As a motivational speaker might say, "The measure of a life well-lived is not in the wealth or accolades one accumulates, but in the hearts one touches and the joy one spreads." Madea's life was a master class in spreading joy and touching hearts. Her very essence was a celebration of life's most precious gift: love. She taught us that to love is to truly be alive, and to be passionate is to infuse every moment with purpose.
In the tapestry of our memories, Madea's threads are woven with vibrant colors of affection and kindness. Her laughter was a symphony that played the music of genuine connection, and her smile was a lighthouse guiding us through life's storms. In every child's success, in every family gathering, and in every act of kindness, Madea's influence lives on.
As we bid farewell to Ms. Mattie Ruth Tolbert, let us not dwell on the silence of her departure, but rather let us celebrate the echoes of her laughter that will resonate in our hearts forever. Let us honor her by living as she did—by loving without reservation, embracing each day with enthusiasm, and nurturing the potential in everyone we meet.
Madea's story is a timeless reminder that the most profound legacy we can leave is the love we share, the lives we touch, and the hope we inspire. Her journey may have reached its sunset, but the dawn of her impact on the world is everlasting. Rest in peace, dear Madea, and thank you for being the light that guided us all.
