Mary Nell Patterson-Green was born in Graceville, Florida, July 5, 1941. She was the daughter of Joseph Patterson and Costello Smith-Patterson. She came from humble beginnings and excelled in academic studies. She was valedictorian of St. Paul High School in 1959. Like her mother, her initial occupation was a domestic servant to Dr. Miller and his family.
She later married Jimmie Green of “state-line,” a community nestled between the Florida and Alabama border. She gave birth to her eldest son Jimmie Green, Jr. in 1964 and moved to Cross City, Florida with her husband. In 1968, she gave birth to her daughter Leslie Green.
She spent the remainder of her life in Cross City as devoted mother, artisan and clergywomen. She wrote: “We must live so that our prayer life and study of the Word of God make Christ’s character second nature.”
She is survived by Jimmie Green, Jr., Deatrick Givens, Adriel Green, Kai Green and Tariq Green. They were beloved by her.
