Deacon Clayton Phillips

Deacon Blorn Clayton Phillips, known affectionately as Deacon Phillips, was a beacon of unwavering faith and gentle strength. Born on Friday, April 29, 1931, in the quaint town of Samson, Alabama, he was a man whose life was as rich and fruitful as the soil he so loved to tend. His journey on this earth came to a peaceful close on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in Wimauma, Florida, surrounded by his loving and devoted family, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and an indomitable spirit that will continue to inspire.

The roots of Deacon Phillips' life story are deeply embedded in the values of family and community. As a young boy, his family relocated to Falling Waters area and later to Caryville, where he grew up surrounded by the nurturing love of his parents, Columbus M. and Ella Rebecca Baldwin Phillips, and his siblings.

Devotion to his Lord and Savior was the cornerstone of Deacon Phillips' life, a foundation that supported a 71-year marriage to his beloved wife, Blanche Newman Phillips. Together, they raised a family that blossomed like a well-tended garden, with four children—Betty Davis of Caryville, Evelyn Phillips of Sun City Center, Florida, Brenda “BJ” (Celestin) Biandudi of Wimauma, Florida, and Jo Ann Anderson (predeceased) —whose lives are testaments to their father's love and guidance. The joy of his life multiplied with the arrival of his (8) grandchildren, (13) great-grandchildren, and (2) great-great-grandchildren; siblings: Athaline Tolden of Tucson, Arizona, and James Leamon Phillips of Melbourne, Florida, a lineage that stands as a living tribute to his enduring love and faith

In the spiritual realm, Deacon Phillips was a cornerstone of the Spirit Filled Church of God in Christ. He and his wife Mother Phillips, were founding members of the church. His service as a Deacon for 67 years was a profound expression of his love for God and his community. He was not only a steward of the church but also a guiding light, serving as Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer with a heart full of passion and grace. His efforts in securing land for the church cemetery are a lasting testament to his foresight and dedication.

Deacon Phillips was elected as a Town of Caryville City Councilman in 1973 and served in that capacity for 14 consecutive years. He took two years off, and in 1989, he was reelected to and continued to serve for a total of 30 years. He was also on the Washington County Planning Commission, the Appalachia Planning Council, and Chairman of the Black Caucus of Appalachia Region Planning, which covered 13 counties. He served as Treasurer for the Tri-County Community Council, a member of the Town of Caryville Council on Aging, and a volunteer firefighter for many years. He was employed for 17 years at Garner Lumber Company, and then he was employed by Arnold Lumber Company, where he retired after 35 years. 

Deacon Phillips' life was a symphony of service, marked by moments of joy spent fishing, gardening, and cherishing time with his family. His faith-filled existence, thoughtful demeanor, and gentle spirit were the melodies that resonated through the lives of those he touched.

Today, as we reflect on the life of Deacon Blorn Clayton Phillips, let us carry forward the torch of his legacy. Let us live with the same humility, grace, and love that he so effortlessly displayed. His journey on earth may have concluded, but the path he carved through his extraordinary life continues to guide us toward our highest calling.
